Born in San Francisco, California, in 1902, Ansel Adams was a self-motivated young man. Through his youth Adams had very erratic schooling; including private home instruction. At the age of twelve Adams taught himself to read music and play the piano. As his self-taught interests grew, Adams also taught himself photography. During a trip to Yosemite in 1916, Adams explored the area through photography.
