Aaron Siskind
1903 - 1981
Born in New York City in 1903, Siskind did not photograph until 1930. He taught himself to photograph after being given a camera. His started documenting Harlem which led him to the Photo League in 1932. He started to become more interested in the abstract, photographing texture, shape and abtract images. He was a very close friend of Franz Kline, even homaged him in a series of photographs. In 1951, Harry Callahan requested Siskind join the faculty at the Institute of Design. They spent decades together teaching many photographers along the way. Siskind ended his teaching career at RISD.
Siskind photographed prolifically until his death at age 88.
